Can we get the ability to get push notifications/voice to Apple TVs.
As much as I would like that i'm pretty sure Apple doesn't allow that.
The new TV functionality of homekit is interesting, I need to see what it offers, it's pretty new.
Big Apple TV event (possibly) March 25th.
We'll see what happens there.
Probably disappointing as had been thier theme lately.
(jaded fanboy)
Edit: I mentioned this in another similar post Caavo allows simple IFTTT notifications.
It's an interesting product.
Maybe it’s time to finally bite the billet and pick up an echo.
If you're already using Apple products get a HomePod. Siri is my voice assistant of choice for my home, works great with Hubitat and the HomeBridge integration.
The HomeBridge integration even lets you use your AppleTV remote to control your devices as well.
Do you mean a fire TV?
As @cstory777 said I have Homebridge set up and am able to control Hubitat devices from my Siri remote.
But Homebridge won't help with notifications on the TV as far as I know.
I don't think the fire TV ecosystem does either.
Android TV probably has some way to do it, but it's in need of some updating imo.
If you really want custom overlays over your Apple TV or indeed any other HDMI including HDCP and 4K source material then the BrightSign digital signage products work really well. They support anything from text overlays to complete HTML5 pages of any size/position or even realtime HDMI originated video inserts, or streaming H.265 MPEG etc. useful for popup doorbell cams. I use them a lot.
They can often be had second hand from your usual eTailer for very attractive prices depending on model .. around $50 - $150 . I haven't tried integrating them though HE yet though. They typically use UDP as their command / trigger transport.

That's actually really cool!
Now you've opened a rabbit hole...
I saw a 4K one for $25 on eBay.
It would be so nice to overlay notifications.
I still would love to override the screensaver, but I doubt the software could check the HDMI source for stale pixels and pop up something then if I press play it sees that it's supposed to be moving pixels again and switches back to the input.
Would love to have a rotating screensaver of photos, and a dashboard with cameras.
I would seriously suspect a 4k AppleTV going for $25. Anything under $90 would be a possible scam. A friend of mine bought what was advertised as a 4k AppleTV for $40 and turned out to be a Gen 2 AppleTV when he got it.
There are a lot of models so do check out the specs carefully. Compare similar models on the Brightsign site as that’s a way to spot differences. Some are true 4K and some upscale and whether or not they support external HDMI for PIP etc. They are really fun to program.

He's referring to the Brightsign 4k device, not an AppleTV 4k... I also read it the same way you did initially!
So, I've seen that most models act as passthrus. Has anyone tested these on things like game consoles and such where a high framerate is desired?
Never tried that.. not a gamer I’m afraid. Do the published specs help at all ? I suspect they just support broadcast standards.
I briefly went through the specs, but didn't see anything about maintaining framerate per se. Just that they support 4K60fps.
I might have to get one just to experiment with.
Keep in mind HDCP is usually broken when using an overlay device like this.
I thought about that as well, however, according to their docs, they successfully passthru HDCP (at least on the XT1144 product, which of course is the most expensive ).
I don’t watch BluRay movies much either so my overlays that I use which are typically pop up text , marquee ticker or overlayed html5 with transparent backgrounds predominately are over broadcast or recorded TV (UK). It always just works and inserted PIP works too of any size and position. So I believe BrightSign have this supported (unless somewhere I’m stripping HDCP in the matrix switcher).
PS. I went this route because at the time most Smart TVs blocked overlays and popups in the EU models due to some obscure regulatory decision, including my Samsung TV. This very nicely gave a solution providing even more capabilities.
Just digging this up.
What do you mean you can use your Apple TV remote with homebridge ?
You can use your AppleTV remote to use Siri.
So use Siri to control your Apple TV remote, what with shortcuts?
No, the AppleTV remote is a voice remote. You can call up Siri with the remote to do anything you want, just like talking to your iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch or HomePod.
