Aeotec Nano Dimmer and Zooz Zen 32

So I have two 1 gang boxes. one has a Zen 32 and the other has the Nano dimmer and the output to some string led lights. There is not enough room for the Nano dimmer and the Zen32 to be put in the same box.

Wiring diagram attached.

  1. I am trying to use the relay in the Zen32 to turn on and off the string lights. I have made the assumption that the S1 switch on the Nano would be seeing the same voltage from the Zen as it would from it's own common out. Therefore by passing 120V to the S1 location I could simulate the same on/off function as when the common is connected to S1 via a switch (per Aeotec diagrams).

  2. Having a neutral in the box with the Nano I assumed it would be using the neutral wire connection and not passing current through the LED string when it is turned off. Currently all LED's are just barely glowing when the device is turned off.

  3. Would it make more since to connect the line in on the Nano to the Zen32 Load connection and just severing all power when the lights are turned off. How long will it take the device to rejoin the network after the power has been cut. I would probably set the Nano to return to last state before power fail, but it might take a minute or two to figure itself out.

  4. Any other thoughts on how to make this system work.

I don't believe the S1 or S2 terminals are designed to take 120 volts. They merely connect to the Nano's common terminal via an external switch.
Why don't you just connect the string lights to the Zen32 load terminal?

We want the string lights to be on a dimmer so we can set their intensity

Control the string lights with the Nano and turn off load control for the button on the zen32 and basically just use it as a smart button to toggle the dimmer? I have a zen30 double switch in my daughter's bedroom that I ultimately ended up doing something like that because 2 of the outlets in the room are on the same circuit as the ceiling fan. I ended up putting a shelly in the fan canopy to control the fan and disconnected the relay on the zen30 so the outlets are always hot and it is just the shelly switching the fan controlled by the zen30 relay button.

Doesn't really matter that it's off, but don't get the relay click this way.
