Adding Multiple Zigbee Devices Simultaneously

Hi there, it’s me again!

Another of my Osram bulbs died, and I’ve given up on the brand. It was one of two devices in a fixture, so I replaced both the dead one and the still-living one with a pair of Sengled devices. Previously (some unknown number of HE software versions ago), when Zigbee was in discovery mode, it would add each device found during the 60 second countdown to the discovery mode page, so you could name and save each one.

Now, it seems that as soon as the first device is found, the discovery mode page is exited and the interface takes you to name the device it found. But the actual process of discovery isn’t aborted, so the next devices that are looking for pairing flash as they talk to the HE, but never show up in the device list because they’re not saved. If you reboot the HE, you might get other devices named “device” with no driver discovered in the list.

This makes it somewhat difficult to pair bulbs that can’t be powered on independently of one another.

Is it possible to restore the old discovery mode behavior, where any device found during the 60 second discovery window gets added to the list of found devices, but HE stays on the discovery mode page so you can name and save them all at once?

I keep a cheap table lamp on hand to make pairing easier (especially handy if you can't see the bulb from where the switch is located). Use this to pair the bulbs before placing them in the fixture.

Its best to do one device at a time.

I find it pretty straightforward to screw in one bulb, pair it, the screw in the next bulb and pair it. Not really seeing this as a major issue… :person_shrugging::thinking:

The last time I moved I paired things in batches of 10. 4 total operations vs 32…

Also, when doing in-wall switch installations in a multi-gangbox, it would be a colossal hassle to do them one at a time.

This thread is a great "heads up".

Somewhere in the back of my head I was probably carrying this assumption-

"well if I make that multi-use room a vaulted ceiling, and only use one lighting circuit I can always use smart bulbs to achieve any diversity of lighting/spotting I might want".

It's these little things that become a major PIA later when you presumed a "once and done" deal....vs..... the need to reach to "re-pair"

This is a very good point. I used to have smart bulbs paired directly to my HE hub. For a variety of reasons (e.g. native HomeKit support, power restore settings, etc..) I migrated to using a Philips Hue bridge and Hue bulbs. While pricier, I have to give Hue credit for building an incredibly stable lighting platform. I have never had to re-pair any of my bulbs, and it “just works” all day, every day. Same as my Lutron Caseta system.

Maybe Zigbee pairing should stop the moment it leaves the discovery page?

That would improve the experience from the present state where it's not clear what the pairing state of devices beyond the first to make connection are, but overall it's a functional regression from the original condition where you could pair multiple things at the same time. That worked fine; never had a single issue doing that. The ability to batch pair is one of the reasons I have a preference for Zigbee over Z-Wave.

I am in the process of migrating my home from ST to HE and I have a bunch of sylvania smart recessed lights. I was a bit frustrated on finding the answers in this thread but I found an 'okay' workaround vs being able to add all the lights in a room at once.

  1. I factory reset all 4 lights in one room (by using the wall switch).
  2. Zigbee pairing in HE (this finds 1 light although I could swear it found 2 at a time once).
  3. Name the light in HE, save the device.
  4. Use wall switch to reset everything again.
  5. Zigbee pairing in HE will find another light PLUS the light that I saved.
  6. Save the new light.
  7. Rinse and repeat until I have added and save all the lights for the room.

Admittedly, it's far from quick but it's way better than pulling all those can lights to pair them individually.

It would be great if HE could add multiple zigbee devices at once. ST did this, although I had a host of other issues with ST.

Anyway, hope this helps someone!

It definitely did used to let you pair multiple zigbee devices in one go. The behavior change is unwanted.

Hey guys
+1 for having the same problem.

I am in the process of moving my system from Hue to Hubitat due to massiv stability problems with motion sensors in Hue.
Having high sealings and lamps with 2 to 6 bulbs presents a major hadache with the current behavior of Hubitat. I actualy stoped the moving yesterday because for the first time I was really angry with Hubitat (to put it politely). carrying a latter to every bulb to something that could be done by the lightswitch is frustrating.

It would help tremendously if, when bulb 1 is paired, bulb 2 would still be able to pair in a second pairing step. I accept that pairing one at a time is better, but its not always easily possible.

User 5222s workaround didn't work out for my. My INNR Gu10 lamps always reset at a group. Or I did something wrong. But thanks a lot anyways.

best regards
