Adding a third-party hub to Hubitat

Hi all!

I recently got the HE a few months ago, and though smart homes aren't as big here in the UK as they are on the other side of the Atlantic, I have been slowly experimenting with what I can get my hands on.

I only recently discovered how to use the dashboard feature on the app, didn't realise there was an app I had to install. :man_facepalming:t4:

As I am going to have extensive renovating works being done at home, I didn't want to invest too much into things at the moment. I wanted to ask whether it is possible to use a third-party hub alongside HE? I have a few Xiaomi products from when they opened their store in London, and not all of them connect directly to the hub. Would it be possible for me to link the Xiaomi hub to the HE?

Thanks!

As far as I’m aware you can’t link the Xiaomi hub as yet, but you can link ST. Which Xiaomi devices are you talking about though?

Some of the devices to connect directly to the HE and they work rather well (contact sensors) but a lot of the others 'drop off' such as the button, motion senors.

Have you read any of the threads on Xiaomi devices?

They do not play nicely with all zigbee repeaters, but if you’re committed to using the xiaomi devices, there are steps you can take to improve their reliability when paired to hubitat.

Thanks for your reply. Yes I have read the threads. But my questions wasn't about linking individual devices to HE, but rather linking the Xiaomi hub to HE. I am aware of the issues that some devices have when linking directly to HE.

Understood, but is there a reason why you want to link the Xiaomi hub to hubitat other than the issues you’ve had with keeping some devices joined to hubitat?

That was mainly it to be honest. I'm waiting for the houseworks to complete before I fully upgrade all my systems, lights, switches, sensors etc. but for the time being was just experimenting with the Xiaomi.

Ok, so as @Royski mentioned, I don’t think that can be done. Perhaps in the future a community-developed app like HubConnect will make it possible.

As you’ve probably noticed already in the various threads, people feel very differently about using Xiaomi devices. Personally, I don’t find the hoops that must be jumped through to keep them working effectively to be worth the time/effort. Though I am as impressed as anyone else by their general functionality, size and price point. I have tried to be more strategic with my purchases of (fully standard-compliant) zigbee devices, during sales etc, to keep costs down.

Edit: also I’m in the US, and as you implied, we tend to have a lot more options when it comes to smart home devices .

You don't have to: a dashboard is just a webpage served by the hub, accessible either locally or via Hubitat's cloud endpoint (if enabled for that dashboard). The app just makes it easier to get to without needing to copy and paste a URL to your phone or whatever you're using. That being said, the app is nice to have for presence (if you want that) and notifications (if you don't want to use a third-party solution).

As to your original question, the answers you're looking for is that it is possible but someone would have to write an integration. (I don't think they have an open API. Home Assistant can connect to it but I assume that was reverse-engineering.) No one has done that for the Xiaomi gateway, so the answer here is "no" and likely will be forever unless someone finds the effort worth it when most of these devices can just pair directly to Hubitat (contact sensors versus buttons doesn't really matter; as mentioned above, it's almost certainly a Xiaomi-unfriendly router in your Zigbee network, though it could also be a range issue.)

I know  I have 30 of their devices on HE :+1:
Contacts, motion sensors and buttons.

I’ve placed Zigbee repeaters all around to prevent the drop offs. This seems to work quite well. Ikea plugs and bulbs, and a few Zigbee switches. For a while now they’ve all been very stable.

Still pretty new to this stuff, so learning something every day. You're right, the dashboard amalgamates everything onto one page, but if required one could easily just navigate to the relevant page on the portal.

Of the 5 devices i have, they all seem to be working rather well at the moment.

That's actually not what I meant. Each dashboard has a link to both its local and cloud versions you can save and use to directly access that dashboard if you want. You can find this under Apps > Hubitat Dashboard, then going to the correct child app for your dashboard and looking for the links at the bottom of the page. You do not need to go through the admin interface and certainly not the Portal each time.
