2026 - Favorite Automations or Devices

I love getting inspiration from others that know more than me.

Call out your favorite automation or device.

For automation, what apps are you using?

For me, it is the addition of a built-in MQTT broker to Hubitat. This lets me convert face and license plate-based events into Hubitat automations very easily. It has also permitted me to integrate a TOF-based salt level sensor into Hubitat.

Admittingly I know very little about mqtt. I’ll need to look more into it!

Right now my favorite device i’ve been using this year is a matter over wifi USB-A -> USB-A switch. Use case maybe a bit niche, but started off as a switch to hard power off my hub when bad stuff happens. Luckily bad stuff happends far less than it used to on my hub. Adding a second one to power cycle an external BT adapter when i reboot my Mac, so continuity features always use the correct Bluetooth interface after Mac OS update reboots. cURL -> maker API to glue it all together.

The automations that are inspiring me the most right now is passing updates back and forth between Hubitat and Apple Shortcuts. Turning off do not disturb on all apple devices as a part of my hubitat wake up routine got be started with expanding Hubitat automation possibilities with Shortcuts. I got shortcuts pushing weather data to hubitat and changing airplay destination based on what room Im in.
i’m experimenting with using ML through shortcuts to scrape app/device updates for some matter devices that dont expose the important info over matter. I’m sure if this last one will scale well enough to enter production though.

Oooh. Please do say more. Link to a guide or more details?

Easy answer: Hubitat supports homekit, you can trigger shortcuts from homekit devices status update. If you dont have an always on M-Series Mac you’l be very limited with what you can do.

My Favourite Automation is having my car lock and close its windows when I put the house into night mode. Night mode also triggers the cameras to arm, ready to capture any motion events during the night. It also turns off all lights and does a security check of the state of all doors.

I have a iOS shortcut that runs based on my phone being connected to a charger after a certain time in the evening and then being disconnected in the morning. This automatically puts my phone in and out of sleep mode.
